The film “Menahi” was screened in Riyadh on Saturday night; an experience the city enjoyed after 30 long years without cinema, reports the Associated Press. Men and children (even girls under the age of 11) were allowed to attend the show at a government-run cultural center.
According to the report, male organizers of the event manned a checkpoint to ensure that no women could reach the theater. Talal Saleh, a 25-year-old who attended the screening, told AP that it’s better to keep women away at the beginning. “This is a conservative society that’s not used to mixing,” he said. “Change should happen gradually.”
How long do you think it will be before that change takes place? Will it ever take place? We are not sure.
