A 14-year-old girl is the only known survivor so far of the 153 passengers and crew on board a Yemenia Air flight that crashed into the Indian Ocean after an aborted landing attempt at Grand Comore, reports the AFP. “She is conscious, she is speaking…. but we are not asking her too many question as not to tire her,” said Ada Mansour, the doctor who treated the girl at the hospital. Reports had earlier said that a five-year-old boy was rescued, but officials confirmed that the girl was the only one found alive as yet.
The cause of the crash is unknown, but France’s BEA air accident board said it was sending a team of investigators accompanied by Airbus experts to the site.
French Transport Minister Dominique Bussereau has said that faults were detected on the ill-fated Airbus A310-300 plane in 2007, but Yemen’s transport minister told Reuters that the aircraft had undergone a thorough inspection in May under Airbus’ supervision.
