A Jerusalem District Court sentenced two Arab journalists from East Jerusalem to two months in jail for violating a military censorship restriction, reports the Haaretz. The journalists reported the timing of the ground offensive in the Gaza Strip in January to an Iranian television.

The reports, Hadir Shahin and his producer, Muhammed Sarhan, notified Iran’s Al-Alam television at 6.33pm that the Israeli military was moving toward Gaza. The offensive began officially at 7.12pm, and a little over an hour later at 8.28pm, the military put a ban on reporting.

“Proximity and immediate broadcasting are power. And information, as was broadcast, is not only power, but is nearly equivalent to weaponry,” the judges wrote in their decision. <p>

“One does not need to be an expert or have great understanding in military history in order to know that the hour at which a military operation begins is of paramount importance,” they added.

The sentencing was part of a plea bargain the journalists negotiated with the court to avoid harsher punishments.
