Dubai Metro: Through Kipp’s lens
Here’s what we saw when we rode on the metro on Thursday.

There are directions to the Khalid Bin Waleed station 500m ahead of it.
There are directions to the Khalid Bin Waleed station 500m ahead of it. Work is ongoing to complete rest of the stations. More than 24,000 laborers have been involved in the metro’s construction. The Khalid Bin Waleed station (just outside BurJuman in Bur Dubai). Inside the Khalid Bin Waleed station.
We didn’t find many passengers in the station on the first day. The station looks quite spacious. Trains to Rashidiya and Jebel Ali are available from the Khalid Bin Waleed station. The ticket process is simple, but some people were still confused. There were security officers throughout the place.
All the stations are themed after water, fire and air. There are several detailed maps of the metro routes. The gaudy chandeliers in the station. A small board points the way for gold class passengers on the platform. There were constant announcements of delays on the first day.
Many people were riding the metro just for the thrill of it. Passengers got a little confused after there were a few wrong announcements because of operational problems. People were figuring out the metro’s route and at which stations it would stop. Obviously, some were tired. Almost everybody had a camera.
The view from the Mall of Emirates station. A train parked at the MOE station. Queues of people waiting to exit the station. The MOE station links directly to the mall, and also has an exit to Sheikh Zayed Road. Cartoons decorate the wall on the way out. We loved the guy on the left.
