One card to rule them all
In an effort to reduce the bureaucratic heartache, the UAE’s Ministry of Interior will merge labor cards, residency permits and the national ID into one card starting from July 2010.

Those who’ve already gone through the trouble of applying for national ID cards don’t need to do anything for now; al-Khouri explained that the national ID cards will carry residents’ labor and residency information, although he didn’t specify when.
Al-Khouri also said the integrated card system will give the authorities access to comprehensive information on UAE residents, and may help tackle crime: “This has more to do with serving the public. A major part of serving the public is also protecting them. Once a national database is complete we will make better decisions, offer better services and customize our planning.”
Apparently, the government was also considering consolidating DNA information it plans on getting from residents to help optimize its database, “but we agreed that at this stage we will not be doing that. The vision is to have one prime database,” noted al-Khouri.
