The Centre of Waste Management in Abu Dhabi announced it has completed a draft resolution to ban the use of plastic bags in shopping malls throughout the emirate, reported Khaleej Times on Wednesday.
The proposal is awaiting approval from the Executive Council in Abu Dhabi.
“If passed, the commercial shops will be granted a six month grace period to comply with the resolution. Plastic bags will be replaced with paper or cloth ones,” Badr al-Harahsha, director of the center told the UAE daily.
“Offenders will face a hefty fine of not less than AED10,000. We expect the resolution to go into force next year.”
He added: “Plastic bags make up to 20 per cent of waste in Abu Dhabi emirate.”
Al-Harahsha also said the government will sanction the establishment of new laboratories to test the components of bags used in the market. Down the line, the government will order producers to manufacture environmentally-friendly bags.
