London-based The Times newspaper was removed from shelves in the UAE on Sunday because of its coverage of Dubai’s debt problems, reports Zawya Dow Jones. The National Media Council “ordered the paper blocked by distributors without providing a reason,” the report said, quoting an executive from the paper.

The newspaper hasn’t been given a timeframe when the ban will be lifted, the executive added.

  1. Why is anyone surprised that this has happened? Every day Emiratis read censored news because it’s easier for a government to keep people happy if they are ignorant of their real situation.

    Thank god for the internet.

  2. Now that’s what you call freedom of speech….

  3. How ignorant would you have to be that having the Times pulled from local newsstands would affect your understanding of the situation one bit? How stupid do the censors think people are?

The irony is that the fall-out from the default is likely to be more local than global, and yet the media coverage is more global than local.

  4. WOW, this was plain “Immature Ignorance” on the part of deciding persons…Closing one’s eyes won;t EVER wish away the oncoming train ….Keep Hoping ( enjoy the sunny wintyer here in Gulf !!) ……

  5. All together now; “there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home”.

    Repeat ad infinitum.

  6. News, is about covering the event.. and not speculative wrong depictions of respected people. Freedom of speech, is not the right to disrespect and print recklessly. It is not the news which the country banned, it was the reckless act.

  7. KANNA-jee …. kya baat hai, arabian gulf mein rahte ho ? Khhoon ka rang bhi laal nahin raha kya ?

    Respected People ??? LmAss !!!

  8. Invest at home not in Dubai is what expatriates need to remember.
