Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) deals announced in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region fell to $7.14 billion during the third quarter of the year, a 54 percent drop compared to the same period last year, according to a report by Ernst & Young.

The number of announced M&A deals has also dropped 26 percent-97 deals were announced in the third quarter of 2009 against 134 in the third quarter of 2008. The average size of a deal also fell from $184 million during the same period last year to $166 million this year.
