The report, based on a picture taken from the International Space Station, said that the man-made islands are "starting to look rather ragged around the edges... now it looks like the project will never be completed".

The report was based on a single photograph, taken from the International Space Station, which apparently shows that the "islands are rapidly merging together and also appear to be sinking."

Developer Nakheel promptly denied the claims: "Speculative reports suggesting that The World islands are sinking are wholly inaccurate," it said in a statement.
