The number of visitors to Sharjah increased 9 percent during the second half of 2009, according to figures from the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA), reports official news agency WAM. This “balanced out the 15 percent decline experienced in the first half of the year,” the report said.
The number of hotels and hotel apartments in the emirate increased by 7 percent in 2009, as compared to 2008, and the hotel occupancy rate fell 11 percent during the period. The number of guests staying in Sharjah’s hotels and hotel apartments was down to 1,447,934 in 2009, a 6 percent decline compared to the 1,535,234 guests reported in 2008, according to the SCTDA.
