Dubai Design District and Expo 2020 to position Dubai on the global map of design hubs.

July 31, 2013 4:10 by

Dubai Design District (d3) aims to position Dubai as a genuine community for the design and fashion industries that can compete on the global stage.

A full service community for organisations related to the design industry, it is closely aligned with Dubai Expo 2020’s theme — ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’.

Economic diversification, a growing knowledge economy, and placing Dubai at the centre of these industries on a global scale are the priorities of these two projects.

Dubai’s high ranking on the Global Innovation Index when compared to other Arab countries makes it the most likely host of the Expo.

Dr Amina Al Rustamani, group CEO of TECOM Investments, responsible for creating and delivering d3 says, “As the home of the regional and international design community, d3 will provide a centre of gravity for international designers and design enthusiasts, leading up to Expo 2020 and a platform of support throughout the event itself.”

Business Monitor International (BMI) predicts that the UAE retail market’s worth will be around AED151 million by 2015. The Dubai Design District aims to capitalise on Dubai’s retail market potential by becoming the hub for design, fashion and luxury related activities.

The substantial revenue generated by this market is due to tourists, who account for 40 per cent of global luxury spending. Dubai’s Tourism Vision 2020, and the ambitious plans of d3 have the potential to make the emirate a retail spending capital.
