Arab Women Firsts

Hayat Sindi is a Saudi medical researcher who became the first Arab woman to win a fellowship in the American innovation network Poptech.

She joins a group of leading scientists, researchers and Nobel laureates in the 2009 fellowship scheme.

PopTech, which provides research grants for scientists and researchers across the globe, chose Sindi, a nanosecond technology researcher at Harvard University, to be its ambassador to the Middle East.

Born in Makka, Sindi has invented a machine combining the effects of light and ultra-sound for use in biotechnology. Her major project is being carried out in partnership with the universities of Exeter and Cambridge.
