Burj Khalifa press coverage valued at $7 million
A video released by the developer’s PR firm reveals the value of two months’ free coverage in print publications alone. But is all publicity good publicity?

The opening of the Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest building – received $7 million in free coverage in print publications in December 2009 and January 2010, according to this video released by the developer Emaar’s public relations company, ASDA’A Burson-Marsteller.
That figure does not include the value of coverage from the 160 TV stations that covered the event, or other material produced by the estimated 300+ media staff present at the launch.
But not all publicity is good publicity. As Kipp has reported previously, the Burj Khalifa recently reopened after ‘maintenance’ issues forced its closure on February 7, after a group of visitors were left stranded in an elevator. And during that time, several VIPs were given a tour of the observation deck – even though the building remained closed to the public.

I would be very surprised had the story not generated this much coverage. It’s not really that difficult a sell to open the world’s tallest building now is it?
