More than 800 people have been evacuated following a volcanic eruption in Iceland, the second in four weeks. Despite serious floods, no lives or property were said to be in immediate danger, but authorities feared another eruption in the future could be worse.
The spread of volcanic ash caused a shutdown of airports in Scotland and Norway, and disruption is expected on other European routes. Some flights to London, Newcastle and Manchester have also been affected.
Ryanair and EasyJet, Europe’s two biggest discount airlines, both warned of likely disruptions. Dubai-based Emirates and Asia’s Nippon Airways both said that some flights have been affected.
