With one of Dubai’s oldest and by that extension most quaint, shopping malls named after this group, it should come as no surprise that the Al Ghurair Group specialises in shopping malls and real estate—as well as manufacturing and investments. Though the brand is now associated with the likes of Mashreqbank, National Cement Company, Masafi Water, Burjuman, Reef Mall and Al Ghurair Real Estate, the company’s initial business was rather different. Al Ghurair Chairman Saif Al Ghurair, began his business as early as the 1930’s when he started pearl diving and trading with his father. After that, the Al Ghurair family made history by starting the first cement factory in the UAE. Shortly after, they were instrumental in the creation of a flour mill, a sugar refinery and an aluminum smelter, and the rest, as they say, is history…
