Mandela is the reason Campbell met Taylor, and the man she has referred to as her second grandfather. In 1997 Mandela held a charity dinner, to which both Campbell and Taylor where invited. Mandela is most famous as an anti-apartheid activist jailed for 27 years, and as the first black president of South Africa. A Nobel Peace Prize winner, Mandela is credited with helping South Africa take huge strides towards healing the racial divide – the moment when the once hated Springboks (South Africa’s rugby union team) won the World Cup on home soil, and Mandela presented the trophy, is seen as a timeless milestone in the country’s reconciliation.
