Another Hollywood actor, and one notoriously connected to Shilpa Shetty. Shetty and Gere met through their work to spread AIDS awareness. In 2007 the pair were at a New Delhi press conference, when Gere grabbed hold of Shetty and kissed her on the cheek several times. The move was considered by many to be an indecent attack on India’s culture and values, which don’t generally permit such behavior. Extreme protestors beat effigies of Gere and burnt pictures of Shetty. One court in India even issued a warrant for Gere and Shetty’s arrest.
Gere has had a long careers as a Hollywood sex symbol, but is also well known beyond the silver screen. He was formerly married to super model Cindy Crawford, and is well known to be a Buddhist. He’s heavily involved with humanitarian causes, including Survival International (protecting the rights of tribal people across the world) and Healing the Divide (promoting peace, justice and understanding).
