Qatar resources question

Qatar’s economic expansion has created sustainability challenges for the emirate, as industrial and population growth calls into question the wisdom of continued government subsidies for water, electricity and petrol. When consumers don’t pay for what they use, they have little incentive to conserve natural resources, economists contend.

For those concerned with the long term sustainability of the tiny gulf state, government subsidies create a distortion in the minds of consumers that permits waste and discourages responsible stewardship of precious natural resources.
