Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum

The Ruler of Dubai is a popular man at home and abroad. Here are some of his more interesting connections, from a champion jockey to a Geordie schoolteacher.

Horse racing is not the be-all and end-all however, and the Sheikh appreciates all forms of sporting competition. Which could be why in April this year he was to be found not only present at the 8th Annual SportAccord International Convention, but hosting it, as the event was held in Dubai. It involves a five-day gathering of 1,500 leading representatives from international sport, and there are few more “leading” than Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee.
Elected IOC president in 2001, Rogge is described as a Belgian surgeon with “a pristine reputation and consensus building style.” With five languages at his disposal, you can understand how he builds those consensuses. Not to mention the fact he has credibility; he is a three time Olympian in sailing. He only joined the IOC in 1991, but by 1998 had risen to the board.
