Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum

The Ruler of Dubai is a popular man at home and abroad. Here are some of his more interesting connections, from a champion jockey to a Geordie schoolteacher.

You can’t move in the Sheikh’s circles without rubbing shoulders with the world’s good and great, and so it proved early last month when the Sheikh attended the English Derby at Epsom racecourse. Also present was Queen Elizabeth II, and when the pair met she described the Meydan racecourse as a wonderful gift to the horseracing (she’s also a fan, you see).
Although the British monarchy has lost a great deal of its popularity, the Queen herself seems to be an exception to the rule. She retains a great deal of popularity in the 16 states of the Commonwealth over which she reigns, and at aged 84, she has been on the throne for an incredible 58 years. Earlier this month it was announced that Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip will be visiting the UAE sometime later this year, her first visit since 1979. No doubt she and the Sheikh will be able to catch-up.
