The Emir of Qatar

Check out the colorful network of Emir Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, whose influence runs the gamut from British royalty, to billionaire magnates, to hard working communists.

Not one to rely on others to get the job done, Qatar’s Emir tasked Akbar Al Baker with the creation of Qatar airways, refusing reliance on other Gulf carriers with “their own economic agenda.”
The dynamic Al Baker hit the ground running and is credited with the success of Qatar Airways, serving 89 international destinations and posting 35 percent growth year-on-year for a decade.
Running an airline is not necessarily good training for tactful diplomacy, and Al Baker is not known for mincing words. Frustrated last summer with delays in receiving aircraft orders from Boeing, the chief commented that, “”Boeing has lost leadership. The mess of this program should have been corrected a long time ago.”
Asked by reporters whether he take the job as Boeing CEO if it were offered, Al Baker commented, “I would take it and a lot of heads would roll. Just like it my airline. … People must deliver.”
