The Guardian reported last month the story of “How Prince Charles triggered an £81m headache for the emir of Qatar.” Seems the royal has very particular notions about architectural matters, and the design sense of Richard Rogers just doesn’t earn the royal stamp of approval.
The controversy swirls around a development of “palatial apartments,” to be constructed on the site of the former Chelsea barracks. The 3 billion pound real estate investment venture is a project of the Qatari royal family, and is concentrated on a few acres of central London real estate. Seems the headstrong Charles disapproved strongly to the architectural aesthetic of the planned project. And his censure is being taken seriously by all involved.
Apparently, Prince Charles, the future king of England, urged the Qatari prime minister to “reconsider the plans,” the Guardian said. And during testimony last month, the court heard that the emir was “very concerned about the national relationship as well as the financial position of Qatar.”
