She’s been called “political royalty” and the “most powerful woman in Latin America.” “It was not an election so much as a coronation,” the Guardian said, of the events that put Argentina’s president Christina Kirchner in office.

But the shine gave way to a nasty tarnish, as media reports went from bad to worse: inflation, farmers’ strikes, stock market declining to five year lows. The press called her “unpopular and besieged,” and spoke of a “rapid fall from grace.”

But earlier this year, Kirchner looked elated as she met with Qatar’s emir, signing cooperation agreements on economic initiatives, trade, and sports, the press reported.

It must have been nice to see a friendly face for a change. Argentina and Qatar inaugurated diplomatic relations 36 years ago.
