The gun-toting 40-strong female virgin bodyguards that surround Gaddafi wherever he goes have been the center of much attention. The women, who wear khaki uniforms, red berets, makeup, nail polish, earrings and sometimes even high heels, undergo severe physical training. It is said that the girls are required to make an oath that they will give their lives for Gaddafi, never leave his side and will forever remain a virgin (although it is also suspected that Gaddafi demands sexual favours from them).

When asked about his rather unusual body guards, Gaddafi claims ‘Women should be trained for combat, so that they do not become easy prey for their enemies.” It may be easy to disregard the seriousness of this bodyguard, but it should be noted that one of Gaddafi’s girls was killed when Islamic fundamentalists ambushed his motorcade. Apparently, Aisha, the bodyguard, threw herself across Gaddafi to protect him from the oncoming bullets.
