The first cousin of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, owner of the Godolphin racing empire and current Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed went to Bell Educational Trust’s English Language school in England in the 1960s. He is formally trained in horse racing and used to ride Arabian horses in endurance races. Although he used to train and keep camels and was involved in polo for a while, in 2006 he decided to focus on horse racing when he teamed up with de Kock. Candy Critic, was their first runner together, and won them the gold in South Africa. Sheikh Mohammed later sent De Kock to South America to purchase Argentine champion Hussonet, but de Kock instead came back with Asiatic Boy, who later went on to buythe UAE Derby in 2007 and finished second to Curlin in the 2008 Dubai World Cup .
