Succeeding his elder brother Sheikh Maktoom as the ruler of Dubai in January 2006, Sheikh Mohammed is the man many credit for transforming Dubai from a sleepy fishing village to a global business hub, not to mention a major tourist attraction. A celebrated visionary, ambitious businessman, and esteemed lover of horses, Sheikh Mohammed is also an established poet. He is famous for his contribution to the field of Nabati, Arabic poetry that emerged with the rise and spread of Islam. Critics say his poetry is both thought provoking and philosophical; here’s a taste:

“How precious the days when nights oppose them

If eternal, I believe them unbearable…

And even springtime, if prolonged

Would not witness, oh friend, people’s yearning”
