Born in 1949, as the first son of the ruler of Fujairah (the late Sheikh Mohammed Al Sharqi), Sheikh Hamad has been the ruler of the emirate since 1974. In actual fact, he was the first ruler in the UAE to be appointed by a federal decree as opposed to the traditional form of appointment by family acclaim. Together with his brother Sheikh Saleh Bin Mohammed, Sheikh Hamad is part of the Bani Mohmmed branch, which controls the local government in Fujairah. He is married to Shaikha Fatima bint Thani Al Maktoum of the Ruling Family of Dubai, and has six children, three boys and three girls.
