Gulf News quoted the ruler of Umm Al Qaiwain as saying: “I want to be mentioned in history as a fair ruler who tried his best to make his people enjoy the greatest amount of welfare, and that I had dedicated my life to preserve noble values that were followed by our ancestors.” Sheikh Rashid, born in 1932, was selected by his father to chair the municipality of Umm al Qaiwain in 1968 shortly after which he was appointed to the head of his father’s office. Sheikh Rashid hails from the Al Ali tribe, which is also known as “the nobility of Rabeea Tribe.” He came to be the ruler of Umm Al Qaiwain in 1981 and is credited with the rapid economic development of the Emirate – in particular, he is esteemed for his efforts of increasing commercial exchange internationally through land, sea and airports.
