The role that financial advisor Amanda Staveley played in the Manchester City deal is said to be remarkable; in fact it has been reported that Staveley walked away from the deal £40 million richer. And yet the 37 year old British former model (who allegedly refused a marriage proposal from Prince Andrew) started from rather humbling beginnings. Dropping out of college due to excessive stress, Staveley persuaded a bank to give her loan to start up her own restaurant, Stocks. The restaurant proved to be the venue for the beginning of Staveley’s connection to the Gulf, for the restaurant was close to the racetrack and was frequented by the racing fraternity including members of Dubai’s Maktoum family. And the rest is history. Amongst her various negotiations, Staveley has been instrumental in helping Sheikh Mansour acquire his stake in Barclays and in negotiations in which Sheikh Maktoum tried (and failed) to buy a stake in the American owned football club Liverpool.
