When Comoros president Ahmed Sambi met Sheikh Mansour last month he thanked the prince for the generous support and assistance they received. He was referring to the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) which has played an important role in supporting social and economic development projects in Comoros. Sambi, known to some as “Ayatollah”, is a Sunni Muslim cleric and businessman who is claimed to have a passion for basketball. The BBC says Sambi “is a charismatic public speaker, who knows how to work a crowd.” An astute businessman, Sambi, set up Ulezi, a television station, and owns factories that produce key Comoros exports including mattresses, bottled water and perfume. Most notably, Sambi was the first Comoran president to ascend to the office of presidency in relative peace; a welcome contrast to the history of coups that Comoros has experienced.
