Shortly after Sheikh Mansour acquired Manchester City, the team underwent a change of management. Sacking Mark Hughes, Sheikh Mansour appointed Italian Roberto Mancini to be the team’s manager. The appointment of Mancini, questioned by some, is rationalized by others due to his reputation as manage at Inter Milan (whom he led to three successive Serie A titles) and his stellar performances as a player during his 20 year career. Playing primarily at club level for Sampdoria, and representing Italy internationally in 30 games, Mancini’s record boasts of an impressive 200 goals. Upon retiring he worked as an assistant to Sven Goran Eriksson at Lazio, and then landed his first coaching job with Fiorentina in March 2001. Macini has come under criticism for his harsh and strenuous training methods. In fact Manchester City’s former conditioning expert, Raymond Verheijen twittered “I really feel sorry for [the] Man City players. They are having a difficult time. Hopefully none of them will suffer a career threatening injury.”
