Ok, sure Wikipedia isn’t exactly the pinnacle of the perfect financial model for an internet startup. But then again, it never really sought to be anything but a non-profit trove of (mis)information. Founded in early 2001, Wikipedia now entertains over 400 million visitors a month in over 200 languages. The site is run on $20 million a year (mostly through donations).
