US blogger hires girl to slap him in the face to remain productive.

Switching your cell phone off, making a to-do list and taking an afternoon power-nap, are all well-known tricks employed by the employed to stay focused at work.  In the modern office, the distractions of yesteryear like playing Solitaire on your boxy PC or conversations around the water-cooler have been replaced by a new monster in the form of social media, hacker news websites and Youtube.

While companies have started limiting access to such ‘time-wasters’ the emergence of data-packages and smart phones still allow for a Youtube marathon of cat videos or unhealthy amounts of time spent on Facebook. With all of the information so easily available and constantly updated, in this age of information overload it is never been easier to procrastinate. So if staying off Twitter is your problem, how do you stay productive?

A US-based blogger Maneesh Sethi hired someone to slap him in the face every time he wasted time.  Through the use of an app called RescueTime, Sethi was able to track just how productive he was. Without an authoritative figure/slapper around, the self-employed blogger’s productivity averaged around 38 percent. However, when he measured his productivity levels of his work in the presence of a slapper, he found a significant increase to 98 percent.

But in spite of the threat of a slap, Sethi says the more important aspect of his experiment was just how important it is to have a social presence as you work: “If you add a social element to the work that you do, you will become more productive. Honestly, the fear of the slap wasn’t the productivity driver. That just made it fun. The real reason why Kara made me more productive is because she added a social element to writing. When I was drafting the outline, I asked for her feedback. When I couldn’t think of the right way to phrase a sentence, she was there to help” he wrote on his blog.

How do you stay productive? Would you ever consider hiring someone to slap you into productivity?
