A US ambassador to Kuwait insulted Kuwait MPs by describing them as dogs. She was only joking.

The US ambassador to Kuwait compared the Kuwaiti parliament to a panel of “cats and dogs,” reported Kuwait Times on Sunday, citing an article in Al-Wattan Al-Arabi magazine. She described male MPs as dogs, and the female parliamentarians as cats. Predictably, her comment has sparked outrage among members of parliaments, who don’t appreciate being described as dogs.

The ambassador, however, was only joking, reports Al-Rai newspaper. But joke or no joke, anyone who’s lived in the region knows that describing anyone as a dog is considered rude.

Surely an ambassador would know that, right?

I don’t think that she meant they were actually dogs. It is a turn-of-phrase meaning their actions that make them such. I think they are taking the issue far too literally and seriously. What are we now going to have the female parliamentarians complain for being seen at cats with claws.. people…

Ghaz… dude… calling them dogs didnt come in the context you assumed.. “At a lecture she delivered at the Washington-based Middle East Institute on August 27, Jones praised the election of four women to the Kuwaiti assembly, adding that some Kuwaiti friends have said that the four women were like cats. Then she answred jokingly that if the female MPs were cats “does that mean that the remainder are dogs?”
