Don’t open the umbrella
Did you know that camels are frightened of umbrellas? Neither did we.

Camels are afraid of umbrellas. And when camels freak out, they run in different directions, which make shepherds mad. When shepherds get mad, they can get violent.
A Bangladeshi man learned those basic desert rules the hard way. He opened his umbrella for some shade, scared a herd of camels, and was beaten up severely by two Saudi shepherds, according to Arab News, citing a report in Al-Riyadh newspaper.
The Bangladeshi man filed a case against the shepherds with the police. The shepherds were arrested, and presumably, they’re even angrier in jail than they were when they beat up the umbrella-wielding Bangladeshi.
Its reports like these that make the GCC fascinating. In spite of the region’s fast-paced development, you can still find endearing stories about shepherds and their camels. They satisfy our search for old Arabia, which, frankly, we rarely see in this part of the world.
