Dubai eGovernment keeps on giving

mPay brings us one step closer to never having to deal with government offices again

October 19, 2008 1:13 by

mPay, I salute you.

The Dubai eGovernment has launched mPay, a facility that allows you to recharge your account with your mobile phone. So far, it’ll only be used for Salik, but it’s a start. I can’t wait for DEWA and Etisalat to use the service, then I’ll give it a proper salute; anything that reduces my contact with government offices makes me a happy Dubai resident. Because taking a day off to visit a government office where everyone knows nothing but insists on being treated like royalty, and where, suddenly, a document I’ve never heard of is absolutely crucial to do anything, is not how I like to spend my hard earned vacation days.

I suspect, however, that like most new facilities introduced in Dubai, the first few weeks will be marred with all sorts of frustrating mishaps.

What do you think?

I agree. If it cuts back on my time spent standing in a government institution, queuing up to get told I need to go to such and such office, and collect another piece of paper, by a bored local, who would much rather be playing Space Invaders than helping me, then it gets my vote.
Unfortunately, it will take eons for this system to work properly, so I’ll see you in one of the many queues.
