Got any chocolates today?

The Dubai police are repeating its last year’s Eid initiative of giving away sweets to traffic offenders.

Dubai Police are giving away 20,000 boxes of chocolates to drivers who break the traffic law over the three-day long Eid celebrations.

“Anyone who is stopped by police for committing a traffic violation in Eid should expect a gift,” said Col Saif Muhair al Mazrouei, deputy director of the traffic department.

The police have said that the chocolate campaign was very successful last year. But what do you think? Will this idea convince drivers to stop violating the traffic rules simply by making them feel guilty?

This is ridiculous! Every other developed country doubles the fines and penalties associated wtih holidays and Dubai Police rewards offenders! This must be a joke. Please. Somebody try enforcing the rules rather than our own police flouting them and encouraging others to ignore traffic rules which are there for everyone’s safety.

How on earth will this stop anyone from committing a traffic offense? Are there any stats from the police about reduced accidents over Eid 2007 being directly attributable to the handing out of chocolates? Lunacy of the highest order.
