The license plate number 82 sold for AED82 million. Seriously.

Abu Dhabi license plate, number 82, fetched AED82 million. That’s right, AED82 million. The auction was organized by the Abu Dhabi Police and held at the Emirates Palace hotel on Saturday.
According to Khaleej Times, the proceeds will be donated to finance humanitarian projects. That’s the only good news.
What is it about license plate numbers that get some people to spend millions? Who cares about the number plate? Seriously, who cares?!
Apparently, a lot of people do. Other number plates were also sold for millions at the same auction: number 30 fetched AED3.55 million; number 22 and 25 were sold for AED3.4 million and AED2.75 million respectively; and numbers 63 and 75 fetched AED2.35 million and AED2.1 million respectively.
We thought the UAE is credit crunched. Who are these people running around with millions of Dirhams to spend on license plates?
