Like a Rolling Stone…

It’s the magazine launch Kipp has been waiting for: Rolling Stone is coming to the Middle East. Will we get cutting-edge political stories? Maybe not, but anything’s better than nothing.

Kipp has been waiting for it for a while, and today we finally got confirmation: Rolling Stone magazine is launching in the Middle East.

A press release has landed on our desk confirming that Dubai Media City-based publisher HGW Media will produce the first edition ready to hit shelves in November.

With a global circulation somewhere in the region of 1.5 million, Rolling Stone is a fortnightly publication that has become an institution in the US. As with Time magazine, making it onto the cover of Rolling Stone is considered to be a huge accomplishment in itself for any musician, businessman or political figure.

According to the release, the magazine will contain syndicated content from the US edition, as well as contributions from reporters across the region. Speaking through the PR minion who no doubt penned his statement, Waref Hawasli, Managing Partner of HGW Media, said: “We are excited to be introducing Rolling Stone Middle East to the market. We feel this prestigious title can speak to multiple audiences through a shared appreciation for music, culture and current affairs.”

We’re pleased to welcome Rolling Stone onto the publishing scene. In the US, the magazine has a reputation for writing culturally significant, controversial and hard-hitting stories, like the one which ended General McChrystal’s tenancy as commander in Afghanistan. Will the new Rolling Stone achieve a similar reputation here in the Middle East? We have to say, probably not. But if it even tests the boundaries of press freedom just a little, it’ll earn its keep.

    Hopefully it won’t end up the same way as plans for a Middle Eastern Vogue which were scuppered after Vogue’s head honchos decided there wasn’t enough freedom of the press out here. When a fashion mag decides to take a stand in regards to free speech over profit, you know there’s a long way to go.
