Look out: British people!

Ah, you crazy, crazy British people. Not long after a man and a woman are banged up in Dubai for being intimate outside of marriage, an Etihad flight from Abu Dhabi is diverted from Heathrow and escorted into land at Stansted by two RAF fighter jets thanks to a drunk British passenger.

First up, the romantic couple: Danielle Spencer, a British woman, and Toby Carroll, a New Zealand banker, were arrested after an incident involving his ex-girlfriend, an apparently fiery Brazilian. Having broken-up with the Brazilian, Carroll called the police after she showed up at his flat to find him ‘entertaining’ Spencer. Reports say she went on a rampage with a knife, and Carroll called the police fearing for his and Spencer’s safety.

Unfortunately what he didn’t bank on was being arrested for sex outside marriage. In fact, all three of them have been arrested. The case has received a great deal of attention from the British press, for the obvious appeal of a love triangle, for Carroll’s position as a high flying analyst, and for Spencer’s past. Apparently she was a pole dancer at a well known chain of UK strip clubs, on arrival in Dubai got herself a breast enlargement, and lost one job for being too flirtatious. The tabloid press has lapped it up.

And then this week we have the case of a man arrested on an Etihad flight from Abu Dhabi to Heathrow. The flight was diverted following an incident on board, and wound up being escorted by two RAF fighter jets to Stansted airport (London’s default destination for security threatened flights). A police spokeswoman said: “A 37-year-old man, a British national, has been arrested following an incident on board an Etihad Airways plane travelling from Abu Dhabi to Heathrow. The pilot reported a passenger causing disruption and making threats.”

Etihad was more diplomatic, saying the plane had been diverted to “offload a disruptive guest”. The precise details of the story are not clear, but the Guardian reports that the man was understood to have been drunk.

Why is it that Kipp is always reading about British people getting themselves into these fixes? Perhaps it’s because the British press are more efficient at getting these stories, or perhaps it is because there are so many British people out here. What do you think?
