Money really does talk

Money really does talk

Two Emirati boys and a Russian teenager were found guilty of first-degree murder, but they were sentenced to only three years in prison. Huh?

November 16, 2009 12:58 by

Three men, two Emiratis aged 19 and an 18-year-old Russian, have been convicted of the first-degree murder of a Pakistani driver by Abu Dhabi Criminal Court, reported The National on Sunday. They were also convicted of alcohol consumption and stealing the driver’s wallet. The driver, aged 35, worked for the Emirati boys’ family.

There were sentenced to three years in jail. The Russian boy will be deported when he completes his sentence.

Three years! People have been put away for longer for breaking minor laws.

The boys hit the driver with a block of wood, doused him with petrol and set him on fire. How could they have gotten three years for that?

The boys paid the victim’s family AED5 million, AED200,000 blood money, and the rest compensation for their loss.

The man’s family, who live in a village in Pakistan, accepted the money and forfeited their right to seek the death penalty.

It doesn’t say much when convicted murders are let off the hook because of their wealth. Those boys are a danger to society, regardless of how rich their parents are.

In Islam, the victim’s family has a choice. It can either opt for blood money, or request for the death sentence.
Obviously, the victim’s family needed the money.

It is one thing to choose blood money over the death penalty. However the state has a duty to ensure murderers are kept away from society a hell of a lot longer than three years.

This sentence is as obscene as the crime.

Waiving the death penalty because of blood money should not translate to an offensively low sentence. Given that you can get 10 years for falisfying an official document or six years for premarital, consensual sex, three years for a grotesque and brutal murder is just appalling.

Happens everywhere (remember OJ Simpson), so dont point fingers at the UAE. 5 Million is no joke especially for Indians and Pakistanis, I would guess many of them would glady lose their family members in return for that sum of money

My previous comments may come across as harsh; so to clarify, while no one wants to have a family member killed like that, many poor people would be glad to receive money in case they face such a tragedy.
Also, I would stress again that the UAE has the fairest judicial system in the world, compared to even USA or UK. Citizens get off the hook everywhere.

Sultan, spare us your wisdom. What a disgusting comment and one which would make foreigners think all Arabs think like you. You think many Indians and Pakistanis would gladly lose family members for 5 million dirhams??? You clearly have no idea of what family means! Sultan is a Muslim name. I’m a Muslim and I’m disgusted to hear such a comment.

Hey Sultan, I am ready to pay you Ten Million Dollars. Would you take that money and ‘gladly’ watch your mother or wife getting killed??

Hey Sultan..You should think twice before posting such comments about Indians and Pakistanis. With out contributions from those people from the subcontinent, you guys would never be living a sophisticated life like you are doing now. You should be grateful to them for building your nation with their sweat and blood while you guys where sitting in bars and smoking hookah.

5 million is no joke!! However, to comment that Indians or Pakistanis would gladly lose their family members for that kind of money is kind of DUMB and INSENSITIVE!!! Think twice before making such stupid comments.

Sultan is one of those filthy rich emaratis who think money can buy them everything. They dont know the true value of life and family. We can not expect anything more from these ‘maid-broughtup’ guys.

Sultan or whatever your name is…

All i can say is that you are sooo stone cold!!!
Shame on you a zillion times over!!!!

Not an Asian but for you to say such disgusting and unfathomable remarks about how Indians & Pakistanis value money over family is just soo appalling!!
Who gives you the right to utter such comments on people who are struggling to make a living?
Not like you who had a life on a bed of roses!

FYI, they have little but they are very proud and they walk tall because they are what their families have made them!

If you got nothing of substance to say just shut up!!!

That’s a very harsh comment!!!better take it back!!!!!
It just shows how much of a pea brain you have.

Family always comes first.and for you to speak of family that way shows how shallow you are!

Where is your compassion?this family is still hurting..aren’t u human??
Don’t you have any remorse in any fiber of your body?
I don’t care whether your yellow, orange or metallic
What u said is just despicable!!!!barbaric!!sickening!!

Just pray that in times to come you wont have to go through what this poor family has undergone.

May God have mercy on you.
