Not Another Speed Limit!

Not Another Speed Limit!

Plans to reduce the speed limit from 120kmh to 100kmh makes Kipp frown: the problem with Dubai drivers isn’t speed, it’s style!

Kipp’s used this space on our blog as a platform for road-rage rants and thanks to this article in Emirates 24|7, today is no different.

According to this article, the RTA is considering a proposal to reduce speed limits on highways like Emirates Road from 120kmh to 100kmh.

We’ve said this before, the problem with Dubai’s roads isn’t so much the speed, but style. Yes we are talking about impatient drivers lacking lane discipline, not observing sensible distance from other cars and just about acting like five-year-olds.

Will reducing the car limit from 120kmh to 100kmh make people drive better? Kipp doesn’t think so. All it will mean is that now we will have drivers cutting lanes, tailgating you at 100 kmh.

Journeys will become longer with the new limit and consequently are more likely to increase a driver’s fatigue. Also there have been studies which have shown that people tend to be more alert at higher speeds than lower.

Of course, the latter point is often up for debate, but the bottom line is there is genuine problem in the way people drive in Dubai.

So, here’s a thought. Kipp recommends that instead of having those money-making Big-Brother-like radars placed all over the roads, why not increase the presence of police on the road. There is something about knowing that there is a car full of those white and green men amidst the traffic that makes everyone fall into line and drive properly. This way you still let the more sensible of drivers amongst us to get home at 120kmh at night and improve the quality of driving on the roads.

What do you think?

Certainly without a disciplined driver population reducing the speed limit on major arterial highways will lead to even greater abuse and frustration.

The introduction of unmarked police cars in many countries has led to a marked improvement in road behaviour. Perhaps this is what needs to be done in the UAE.

I am glad that Kipp is the only media outlet to actually point out the absurdity of blindly lowering speed limits. If accidents still happen at 100kph, then will we probably see Dubai wide speed limits of 40 kph ?

Speed is an easy thing to blame to all media and “experts” always blame it. Cars at 160 kph with adequate braking distance and proper lane discipline are much safer than having 10 cars drive in space of 100m at 80 kph, but no one understands that…
