Oprah angers Lebanese with Nancy Ajram clip

A 28-second clip about Nancy Ajram on The Oprah Show has the Lebanese up in arms.

There’s been a lot of buzz over The Oprah Show’s 28-second-clip about Nancy Ajram, aired on MBC 4 this week. The clip introduces the singer as Lebanon’s Britney Spears, and claims she has caused controversy in “this deeply conservative nation” (aka Lebanon).
The clip, all 28 seconds of it, has caused outrage among the Lebanese, prompting one woman to write the following on Oprah’s message board (we’re publishing it warts and all):
“We as Lebanese are very disappointed in the show in regards to you stating that lebanon is a conservative country. You and I, think most of the Americans are too ignorant to know what exactly you are saying. If you would actually sitdown and research what is Lebanon, and the middle east and Muslims your pathetic opinion would change.”
Kipp’s viewed the clip, and frankly, it’s a little cheap of her production team to use images that aren’t specific to Lebanon. The images feature women covered head to toe in styles that are more likely to be worn in Iran and the GCC than in the Levant.

Oprah’s an entertainer not a journalist, & her staff has hundreds of shows a year to produce. They don’t have time to devote that much research into a 28 second clip. Oprah obviously meant well & she’s done a lot to combat stereotypes about Arab women on her show even if she sometimes makes mistakes.

clearly you did not do your research properly either because not everybody in iran dresses like that either. clearly you have never travelled to iran. this was a very poor attempt to critise Oprahs journalism when clearly yours is no better
