A 10-year-old girl in Saudi was recently “returned” to her 80-year-old husband by her father after she ran away and hid in her aunt’s house, reports Arab News. According to reports, the husband, who denies he is 80, accused the aunt of interfering in his affairs. “My marriage is not against Shariah. It included the elements of acceptance and response by the father of the bride,” he said.
He said that he was originally engaged to his wife’s elder sister, but it broke off because she wanted to continue with her education. “In light of this, her father offered his younger daughter. I was allowed to have a look at her according to Shariah and found her acceptable,” he said.
How can a 10-year-old be allowed to marry an 80-year-old man? He’s old enough to be her grandfather.
Late last year, international media reported on a court ruling that denied to a motion to annul the marriage of an 8-year-old girl to a 47-year-old man. The kingdom’s Human Rights Commission said at the time that they were trying to fight the problem of child marriages in the country.
It seems like a lot more needs to be done to save little girls from becoming wives.
