In a strange contribution to the debate on polygamy, a recent report in Emirates 24/7 tells the story of a Saudi wife who brought her husband a new bride as a goodwill gesture.

According to Saudi Arabia’s Arabic daily newspaper, Sharq, the unidentified couple’s marriage was under strain after the wife had embarrassed her husband in front of their relatives (we’ve all been there).

And so, in an innovative attempt to restore her husband’s dignity, the wife brought him a bride and paid for all the expenses of the wedding – a fact that was explained to all of the guests.

This gives a whole new meaning to putting in effort to make a marriage work. Stories like this one remind Kipp that maybe we haven’t heard it all.

But one question that springs to mind is, does a man whose current wife goes hunting for a new wife for him get much dignity from it? And our second thought: clever girl. These are just the actions of a wife who doesn’t much like her husband, and would prefer to spend a bit less time with him.

Or else the bride she (the wife) found for her husband is her school mate enemy!
