“If a person gives SR1,200 ( AED1,175) to his wife and she spends SR900 (AED881) to purchase an abaya (a black gown worn by women in the Saudi Arabia) from a brand shop and if her husband slaps her on the face as a reaction to her action, she deserves that punishment,” Hamad Al Razine, a Jeddah court judge said during a seminar on domestic violence, reports Arab News.

Al Razine was explaining the reasons for the increase in domestic violence in the kingdom, and said that women were equally responsible for its rise. ‘Women’s indecent behavior and use of offensive words against their husbands’ was one of the reasons, he said, “but nobody puts even a fraction of blame on them.”

According to the report, his comment drew an angry reaction (unsurprisingly) from the women in the audience.

How can the rise in domestic violence be blamed on women, when they are usually the victims?
