Smoking makes you ugly

Smoking makes you ugly

A study has found that warning of death on cigarette packs aren't deterring smokers. But other messages will.

A study by researchers from the US, Switzerland and Germany claims that smokers are less put off by warnings of imminent death on cigarette packages than by the physical harm smoking may cause, such as “smoking makes you unattractive,” reported Reuters on Wednesday.

Addicts who smoke to boost their self-esteem, like young smokers, are more likely to respond to messages.

“In general, when smokers are faced with death-related anti-smoking messages on cigarette packs, they produce active coping attempts as reflected in their willingness to continue the risky smoking behavior,” the study said.

“To succeed with anti-smoking messages on cigarette packs one has to take into account that considering their death may make people smoke.”

The study surveyed 39 psychology students, aged between 17 and 41; all of the respondents claimed to be smokers.

Why isn’t the threat of an early death scary enough?
