Stating the obvious

Did you know that driving dangerously is…dangerous?

Every now and then we come across an article that makes us cringe. Here’s one of them. It’s an editorial published in Gulf News entitled ‘Exercise three Cs on Dubai’s roads.’ The writer makes a number of spectacularly obvious statements like “…every time you get behind the wheel of a car, exercise the three Cs: Courtesy, Caution and Common sense.”

Does this mean that harassing other drivers is bad? And driving while having a three-course meal isn’t safe? And when we show our friends we can drive with no hands (“Look! No hands!”) we’re putting other people at risk?

Say it isn’t so.

Giving people credit for “driving” in Dubai is too high an accolade. Driving involves a conscious level of thinking about what you are doing and what others are doing around you. The vast majority of people on Dubai roads are simply steering their cars (although even this is debateable in some cases).

You are putting people with a 7th century culture in a 20th century machine.

People who push and shove into you in a queue at the post office will just do the same behind the wheel.

Combine that with a set of beliefs that absolve you from personal responsibility for your actions and hey presto – road chaos and carnage.
