The Apple Addiction: Idiotic or Impulsive?
The mad scramble among some Apple fanatics to get the iPhone4s, even if it means getting it from the grey market for as much as Dh10K, is just plain laughable.

If you are a crazy Apple fanatic then you would know what separates the iPhone 4S from the rest is a faster processor, an 8-megapixel camera and an updated OS. What you may not know, is that even though the phone is yet to be released here in the Middle East, if you try hard enough you could score a phone of the grey market.
Rumshed KK at Micro City in the Mall of the Emirates told The National: “We had one arrive here on Saturday and it was sold for Dh6,500 the same day to a French businessman.”
According to a report, prices for the latest member of the iPhone family on the grey market through third-party sellers here in the UAE go for anything from Dh6,000 (16GB model) to Dh9,750 for (64GB version).
Spending up to Dh10 K on a phone? Where, oh where in the world does Kipp begin.
*Takes a deep breath in*
How about with the obvious? The ridiculous levels some people will go to in order to feed the Apple Addiction is horrifying. Ten years ago, owning a Mac was a symbol of being tech savvy, of appreciating excellent interfaces and advanced operating systems.
Now, with this cult-like following, owning the latest Mac is more and more becoming a symbol of the extent you’ll go to show how flashy you are. It takes a special kind of person to feel good paying three times the actual retail price for something that doesn’t even have a proper data package yet. We’re reminded of those avid consumers of Ed-Hardy.
“Oh look at me, I just sold my iPhone 4 at a loss, to spend upto almost Dh10 K on the grey market for a phone that is essentially the same. But it doesn’t matter, it shall keep good company with my two iPads and the dozen iPods.”
Sure, the phone maybe faster than the iPhone 4. And sure, the 4S has been at the receiving end of several positive reviews, but splurging so much of cash, when you have a perfectly good iPhone 4 in your hands is borderline irresponsible.
We’re not ones to refute arguments that Dubai feeds our consumerist in us, but nothing makes this kind of excessiveness okay. Have you not seen this Story of Stuff?

This video isn’t just for sharing on Facebook or Twitter and then forgetting about it. We have to start being involved in the bigger picture some time. And why not make it right now, by not feeding into this ‘must-have’ retail therapy obsession that has brought our economy to its knees.
It’s one thing to have brand loyalty, to be an early adopter-but to go out of your way to blow off three to four times the retail price just to have the latest gadget, which will most likely be obsolete anyway.
