What is Graph Search?
Facebook Graph Search provides user with an opportunity to conduct a personalised search-the results of which are based on the activity of one’s ‘friends.’ The search relies on human tendencies’ to trust recommendations of their social circle more than any magazine review or internet rating.
Graph Search will allow you to get recommendations from your friends: from which TV shows they are watching, which restaurants they are eating at and which dentists they prefer to visit.
How can I use it?
Right now, Graph Search is in beta testing—it is available to users in the US who use Facebook in English. If you want to use it, you can sign up to join the waitlist by scrolling to the bottom of this page.
What is the big deal?
The jury’s out on the success of Facebook’s Graph Search-the functionality and its popularity can only be gauged when the billion odd users gain access to the search engine. But from here, this product seems like a game changer because it provides a way for Facebook to cash in on the massive hold it has and provide investors with a reason to stay on board.
Is it a threat to Google?
Graph search maybe revolutionise the way people search, but it is difficult to see how it will have the damaging affect some spectators claim it to have. While Facebook maybe able to provide a personalised search unlike any engine will ever be able to, it doesn’t yet have the scope that Google has.
